VISTEON PANOZ RACING TEAM PRESS NOTES
DODGE DEALERS GRAND PRIX AT LIME ROCK LIME ROCK PARK
Saturday, May 23, 1998
Driven by Eric Bernard, the #5 Visteon Panoz GTR-1, driven by Eric Bernard qualified on pole for Monday's Virgin Interactive GT Championship race. Eric shattered the current GT1 qualifying record with a time of 51.118 seconds at 108.45 mph. The previous record holder was Darin Brassfield, who qualified in 1995 with a 53.249 second at 104.114 mph lap.
Eric Bernard, #5 Visteon Panoz GTR-1, qualified first: "I am really happy for the Visteon Panoz Racing Team because it is my first time here and I got pole. The team worked on the car throughout the practice sessions, and we've come up with a good balance for the Visteon Panoz. Lime Rock is a really interesting, technical track, and I like it. I'm looking forward to the race."
The #4 Visteon Panoz GTR-1, driven by Andy Wallace qualified second for the race, with a time of 51.976 seconds at 106.66 mph, also breaking the 1995 record.
Andy Wallace, #4 Visteon Panoz GTR-1, qualified second: "I'm happy for the Visteon Panoz Racing Team in that both Visteon Panoz GTR-1s make up the front row of the race on Monday. The car was good, the Michelin tires were good, but I think I could have been a bit quicker. We'll see what happens in the race on Monday."
Tony Dowe, managing director, Panoz Motor Sports: "The Visteon Panoz Racing Team worked really hard all weekend. When we found out that we were not going to be allowed to run in the same race as the WSC cars, it would have been the easiest thing in the world to just cruise along, and I'm really happy that all the engineers, the drivers, the mechanics, and everyone on the team really kept at it. With Le Mans coming up, that's a really good positive mental attitude."
Weather permitting, Raul Boesel will be piloting the #30 Beloit/Fast Rod/Team Losi/McCormack Motorsports G-Force/Aurora in the 1998 Indianapolis 500. He will join the Visteon Panoz Racing Team on Sunday night following the race to co-drive the #5 Visteon Panoz GTR-1 with Eric Bernard.
