LUCAS DOWNS REDEEMS HIMSELF TAKING HIS FIRST IMSA LITES WIN
TOOELE, Utah May 17 -- Lucas Downs, Butterfield, Minn., started from the pole and didn't make a mistake on his way to victory in round four of the IMSA Lites presented by Frisby Performance Tire at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
Lucas won by over five seconds, the margin he had in yesterday's round three before he spun. Lucas didn't put a wheel wrong on Sunday, beating Joel Feinberg, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and brother Matt Downs, who won yesterday.
"My crew told me my lead was down to three and a half seconds, so I had to put a couple of faster laps in," Lucas said. "Then I got the gap back up to five or six seconds."
Feinberg started third but passed Matt Downs going into turn one at the start of the race. He did his best to catch the pole setter, but didn't have the overall lap times to get the job done.
"I was faster than him in some of the fast stuff, but he got me in some of the slow stuff," Feinberg explained. "I would gain a second and then lose a second. There's not enough time to make any mistakes."
Behind the leaders, Paul Barnhardt III, Houston, Texas, was on the move. Barnhardt started ninth and moved to sixth on the first lap. He then passed Kyle Marcelli and Matt Downs for fourth before Marcelli and Barnhardt touched in turn five.
"I made a ton of changes from yesterday. It was a lot of fun," Barnhardt said. "It was a great race. I got to be behind some of the fast guys at the front. They pulled me around some."
Gary Gibson, Riverwoods, Ill., won the Masters class, finishing eighth overall, after running as high as sixth.
In the Lites Three class Chris Doyle, Westminster, Colo., repeated his round three victory taking top honors again in round four.
The next stop on the IMSA Lites presented by Frisby Performance Tire schedule is Formula X at New Jersey Motorsports Park June 12-14. This will be the first time the IMSA Lites series has visited the Thunderbolt Raceway.
