Gerardo Bonilla gets fourth win of 2007 IMSA Lites season at Lime Rock

Lime Rock, CT - Gerardo Bonilla won his fourth race of 2007 in the IMSA Lites Series presented by Hankook at Lime Rock Park. Driving for B-K Motorsports, Bonilla also finished second in the weekend's second race, both races in support of the American LeMans Series event.

Having won the Pole for the first race by 1.8 seconds, Bonilla easily led into Lime Rock's "Big Bend" first turn. The second and third place cars battled early, allowing Bonilla to increase his lead steadily. By the end of the race, Bonilla was 15 seconds ahead of the next car driven by Jay Cochran.

"The second and third place cars made it easy for me this race. If they hadn't fought, it would have been a race for the lead. I heard Jay spun too, so that hurt his chances. But it really shows what the B-K Motorsports team is capable of," Bonilla said after the first race.

In the second race, starting positions were determined by the fastest laps in the first race, and Cochran had just edged ahead by a tenth in that battle. Bonilla would start second.

Into the first turn Bonilla and Cochran were side by side. They bumped into each other at the apex, and Cochran slipped into the lead. "It was a racers's bump, nothing malicious. I actually laughed in my helmet! I thought, 'Okay Jay, I see your move, and I'll just have to come get you now.'" Bonilla exclaimed later.

Bonilla gave chase for 35 laps, getting as far back as 1.7 seconds, and as close as touching Cochran's bumper. They both enjoyed working through traffic on the relatively short 1.5-mile layout of Lime Rock Park. As the laps expired, one of those lapped cars separated the two leaders by 3 seconds. The race would finish with this gap.

"Jay was just really fast in the second race. I actually enjoyed his challenge. We had to think big picture and take the second place finish. To go faster would have really increased the risk, so that didn't make a lot of sense. It's a great day for B-K Motorsports!" said Bonilla after the podium celebrations.

B-K Motorsports and Gerardo Bonilla will continue to follow the IMSA Lites series to Mosport International Raceway near Bomanville, Ontario on August 25-26, 2007. Bonilla now leads the IMSA Lites championship 30 points.
