Ferrari, Dodge, BMW break Rolex 24 qualifying marks at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 11) -- Three Rolex 24 At Daytona qualifying records were unofficially broken Saturday at Daytona International Speedway in IMSA sports car testing for the Feb. 1-2 Rolex 24 At Daytona. The Moretti Racing Ferrari 333 SP Exxon World SportsCar driven by Belgian Didier Theys was clocked at 1:40.988, an average speed 126.90 mph, the fastest time posted by 59 Exxon Series cars on hand for the test. Theys is the official qualifying record holder for the Rolex 24 with a lap of 1:41.224/126.610. The Exxon GTS-1 Dodge Viper GTS-R of Olivier Beretta was clocked at 1:47.982/118.68. In addition, the Porsche 911 Turbo of Hans Stuck turned a lap of 1:49.280/117.27, which was also better than the official mark set by Darin Brassfield in an Olds Aurora at 1:50.071/116.433. The Exxon GTS-3 BMW M3 of Bill Auberlen was one of three cars in the smallest GT class to beat David Donohue's mark of 1:57.314/109.245. Auberlen was timed at 1:55.856/110.62, Dorsey Schroeder was at 1:56.638/109.87 in a new Acura NSX that made its first outing at Daytona and the Dieter Quester/Marc Duez BMW was at 1:56.947/109.58. Among the mishaps Saturday were a crash in the West Horseshoe that damaged the GTS-3 Porsche 911 of Tom and Jason Dittmer, Mike Gagliardo and Tone Grant; and a crash at the exit of the infield that left the Almo Coppelli/Rocky Agusta Callaway Corvette stranded atop the berm between turns one and six. In night practice, the Andy Evans/Fermin Velez/Rob and Charles Morgan Ferrari 333 SP was quickest at 1:42.665/124.83, followed by the James Weaver/Butch Leitzinger/Rob Dyson/John Paul Jr./Andy Wallace Ford R&S Mk. III at 1:42.822/124.64. The Oreca Viper was under the GTS-1 qualifying record in the dark with a lap of 1:48.851/117.73, while the Auberlen/Boris Said/Javier Quiros BMW did likewise in GTS-3 with its lap of 1:57.198/109.35. The IMSA test concludes Sunday. At least 17 Ford NASCAR Winston Cup stock car teams begin their final three-day test of the pre-season on Monday. The Oldfield Grandstand is open daily at no charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with access through the DAYTONA USA lobby.
