May 9 - Ted Horn wins sprintcar race on 1-mile dirt oval at Trenton, New Jersey, USA (1948).

- Stockcar racer Tim Fedewa born (1967).

May 10 - CART Champcar racer Helio Castro-Neves born (1975).

- Richard Petty wins the NASCAR race on the shorttrack at Nashville, Tennesee, USA (1980).

May 11 - Sportscar racer Herbert Muller born (1940).

May 12 - Roy Salvadori born (1922).

- Joe Leonard crashes, in practice, the STP turbine car that had nearly won the previous year's Indy 500. He is OK, but the car is destroyed (1968).

- Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya win the Bank Utama Indonesian Rally in a Ford Escort RS Cosworth (1996).

May 13 - Jackie Stewart withdraws from the Indy 500. A previously sustained hairline fracture in his wrist prevents him from driving (1968).
