Art Pollard dies in crash during practice for the Indianapolis 500 (1973).

May 13
Bobby Rowe, driving Don Schumacher's "Stardust 'Cuda", wins the "Coke Circuit" funny car drag race at Miami, Florida, USA (1972).

May 14
John Surtees drives a F2 Lola T100 to victory in the Guards Trophy Race at Mallory Park, England (1967).

May 15
Work begins on the Monza Autodrome in Italy (1922).

May 16
Alfa Romeo T33/3s finish 1-2 in the Targa Florio road race (1971).

May 17
Jigger Sirois waves off his qualifying attempt on the first day of qualifying for the Indy 500. Because of rain, no other cars attempt to qualify that day. If Sirois had not waived it off, he would have sat on pole. Sirois fails to qaulify for that year's 500 and also fails six more times and never races in the 500 (1969).

May 18
Joe Leonard puts his STP turbine car on pole for the Indianapolis 500 (1968).
