March 9 - Sportcar great Brian Redman born (1937).

- David Coulthard wins the Australian Grand Prix in a Mercedes powered McLaren. First Mercedes Formula One victory since Juan Fangio won the 1955 Italian Grand Prix (1997).

March 10 - NASCAR racer Mike Wallace born (1959).

- Cannonball Baker dies of natural causes (1960).

March 11 - Indycar racer Troy Ruttman born (1930).

March 12 - NHRA Funny Car driver Whit Bazemore born (1963).

March 13 - Indianapolis 500 competitor Lynn St. James born (1947).

March 14 - Lee Petty, stockcar racer and father of Richard Petty, born (1914).

- The great "romantic" age of South American road racing begins with the start of the first Gran Premio Internacional. The running of this 2733.6 mile (4409 km) event from Beunos Aires to Satiago de Chili was a rally which was won by Arturo Kruuse of Patagonia, Argentina, in a Plymouth (1935).

- Eugenio Castelloti killed while testing a Ferrari F1 car at Modena, Italy (1957).
