January 26 - Paul Newman, actor, racer, and part owner of Newman-Haas Racing, born (1924).

January 28 - Bruce Mclaren drives a BRM to victory in his last race ever in New Zealand, at Teretonga. Jim Clark finishes second (1968).

January 30 - Jerry Unser wins the NASCAR Sportsman Division feature stockcar race at Honolulu Stadium. This is Jerry's first feature win in Hawaii, where he is stationed while in the Navy (1952).
