Pikes Peak International Hill Climb inks Falken Tire as title sponsor.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is pleased to announce that Falken Tire has assumed title sponsorship for the 2002 Race to the Clouds.
Located in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Falken Tire is one of the leading ultra-high performance tire companies in the world. Falken joined the Hill Climb's sponsorship family last year. That experience prompted it to increase its support in 2002.
"We very much enjoyed our initial experience with the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb," said Richard Smallwood, Falken's vice president of sales and marketing. "Because of the outstanding response we received from our dealers and motor sports enthusiasts, we are more than happy to enhance our relationship with the Hill Climb by assuming this title association."
Smallwood said the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an ideal partner for Falken because it demands an ultra-high performance from the drivers, the teams and their racing machinery.
"As a kid, I loved watching this race and I dreamed of someday being there and being involved," Smallwood said. "I remember watching the Unsers and the other big names in racing taking it to the limit all the way up that mountain. This is the ultimate all-or-nothing road race where mistakes can be costly. My hat is off to those courageous enough to take on such a challenge"
Falken Tire is active in racing around the globe. It will sponsor its own team and driver, Masayuki Akaba of Utsunomiya, Japan, in the race's High Performance Showroom Stock division.
"This is truly a ground-breaking agreement," said Steve Matthiesen, chairman of the PPIHC board of directors. "We're fortunate to have a company of Falken Tire's status as our title sponsor and we look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship."
The official name of the race is now the Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Race week begins June 25th with car and truck practice. The race is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m., June 29th.
