Yet another podium position for Team rhino's Leipert at the ADAC GT Masters
(31/05/10) Last weekend, Team rhino's Leipert entered the third championship event of the ADAC GT Masters at the Hockenheimring.26 GT racing cars participated in the race. Since the first race of this championship 4 years ago, this has been the second largest starting field ever on this traditional race track.
After the successful outcome of the race on the Sachsenring three weeks ago, the team was now confident of success, and so they entered the free practices on Friday with their drivers Roland Rehfeld (Berlin) and "rhino's junior squad"-driver Norman Knop (Willich) who reached 6 and 8 place. Qualifying already took place on Friday evening where Norman Knop raced the first qualifying and Roland Rehfeld the second one. Both put the Ascari KZ1R GT3 on 10 starting position for both races. After such disappointing performance during qualifying, the team found a fault around the engine which is believed to have lead to unwanted weak performance.
So, the team entered the first race on Saturday with fresh hopes and highly motivated. After a strong first lap, Norman Knop crossed the finish line in 7 place and progressed further to 6 place. In a mind blowing duel, he overtook the Audi of Ludwig/Mies from outside as he was approaching the Mercedes Arena and continuously extended his lead on his pursuers. Knop continued to catch up to the top flight of the field with fast laps in order to hand over to Roland Rehfeld after half an hour. When Team rhino's Leipert had the fastest pit-stop of the entire field, the Ascari was then held on position 4 by Roland Rehfeld. The last quarter of the race was extremely exciting since the driver who had been in the lead up until then had to drive through the pit lane due to a rule violation.
Three cars were fighting for victory the Porsche of Bergmeister, the Lamborghini of Kox and Roland Rehfeld in his Ascari. Whilst the timings of the leading trio were all within 1 second from one another, the team was feeling tense, and the spectators saw one of the best GT races of the running season. In the end, the Ascari of Team rhino's Leipert came in a sensational third a result which nobody could have dreamed of after the mediocre free practice, so, naturally, the team was in ecstasy.
The second race started at Sunday lunchtime and, sadly, finished for the team and Roland Rehfeld after half a lap. When Rehfeld got off the track as a result of a duel amidst the turmoil of the starting phase, the Ascari was damaged at the front. Cooling fluid and oil were leaking and prevented adequate brake retardation on the turning and hence led to a collision of the Ascari with two further competitors. As a result, the race finished prematurely for Rehfeld.
Finally, Team Manager Ingo Leipert had this to say: "Our feelings went on a rollercoaster ride this weekend. The first race was a full success, especially when considering that we entered the race from position 10. Both drivers and our team in the pit performed very strongly, and we are proud of them. The second race was over too soon, but that is Motorsport. We now concentrate on our next race in Assen where we want to confirm our good form and catch up in the championship. A third place is within reach for our strong driver duo!"
