Bad weekend for team rhino's Leipert
(17/08/10) Last weekend (13 - 15/08/10) rhino's Leipert took part in races 9 and 10 of the ADAC GT Masters series which were held on the Eurospeedway Lausitz.
The entire team had high hopes for these races on the Eurospeedway which incidentally were "home matches" for Roland Rehfeld who is from Berlin. Unfortunately though, the team did not get the chance to reach their high aims. Free practice took place on Friday where a strong field was at the start. The Ascari of rhino's Leipert finished both races in 11th place; still, the team had high hopes for the qualifying. They were one of the few teams who did not make use of the option to use a new set of tyres. Therefore, the deficit of approximately 1 second to 1st place was easy to bear.
Roland Rehfeld finished 7th in the Ascari during the first qualifying session whilst Norman Knop finished 14th.
At 12 o'clock on Saturday, the 9th race of the year was started. Since it had rained heavily earlier, the organization held a little additional training of 15 minutes at 11 o'clock in order to prepare the drives for the changed conditions. After 2 laps, Norman Knop signalled an unexplainable loss of power from the V8 Ascari engine. After brief analysis in the pit it was clear that the engine itself was the problem and that the race could not be started.
During the following hours until late at night, the team tried their utmost to repair the engine, and during all this time, engine manufacturer Judd Engine Developments proved a much more reliable help than the manufacturer Ascari Cars itself. Since it was not possible due to lack of time to organize the delivery of a spare engine or exchange the defect engine block up to the second race, the week end was over for the disappointed crew of rhino's Leipert.
"This week end proved to be a disaster for our drivers and us. We had high aims but did not get the chance to achieve any of them. We are now working hard on the problem with the help of engine manufacturer Judd in order to be back in the spotlight next week during our home race on the Nurburgring as part of the FIA GT1 World Championship", explained Ingo Leipert.
