TOURING AND GTU
Montrial (September 22, 2003) - Laval's Hughes Guénette (Hyundai Canada/Motos Illimitées) turned in the best GTU finish for his Hyundai Tiburon with a second place showing. Earlier in the day, Guénette took the third spot of the Touring race; ahead of his teammate Jacques Gravel, who got assessed a penalty for an illegal tail pipe and placed 4th by the Series' officials. Driving the third Key Motorsport car, Sylvain Laporte finished ninth after qualifying seventh.
"The Key Motorsport team gave me a totally great car today," said Hugues Guénette. "St-Eustache is a bumpy track so it made for a tough race especially with such a high average speed this time, I'm happy with this result since I had a mechanical failure at the in round 7 that cost a good finish. Both results are great for me."
The 2003 Touring season ended with Jacques Gravel (BMW 328i) third in the Championship - missing the first two events - with a total of 120 points, nine points over Jean-François Déry. The Hyundai Canada sponsored Hyundai Tiburon - driven by Marc-Antoine Camirand and Hughes Guénette, finished with a total of 67 points. Sylvain Laporte's Hyundai Tiburon, sponsored by Sikkens and prepared by Key Motorsport, finished with 30 points. As expected heading into the season, the battle for the Championship was tight and it became one of the closest contest season.
"Key Motorsport had a great year," said Key Motorsport's team owner Steve Djelebian. "In the Touring races, we had a few hang-ups but we also had some real success, winning two races, six podiums and finishing all events we participated in the top-4."
"I owe a lot to the team members for their contributions: Head mechanic Éric Côté and team mechanics Simon, Jung-Yul and Stéphane."
"A hard-fought Championship, the 2003 FAQ/Hankook Championship went far beyond its mandate of providing exciting, competitive racing - no doubt, a year that will be remembered," concluded Steve Djelebian.
The races will be televised on RDS on later this fall.
