Second Win For JMB Racing Europe In The Italian GT Championship
Miramar, May 3, 2004: The circuit of Magione, to the south of Florence, was the host of the 3rd round of the Italian GT Championship, which includes two one-hour races per weekend.
Although the weather was excellent throughout, it was an eventful weekend for JMB Racing, alternating good and not so good moments for the Ferrari 550 Maranello driven by Lorenzo Case and Domenico Guagliardo.
During the first qualifying session, the latter, like a number of other drivers, was caught after just six laps, by a patch of oil, which had not been reported, and was therefore unable to improve on his 12th-fastest time. He did not prove to be much luckier during the race, as, after gaining five positions in just four laps, the car fell back to the last place after a minor collision on the 5th lap, and Domenico Guagliardo was forced to retire on lap 8 with transmission failure.
After Lorenzo Case qualified in 4th position, the second race looked more hopeful in terms of a good result. However, plenty of action and high emotions also played their part, and the result took a long time to come together.
Making a good start, Lorenzo Case pulled himself up to 2nd place, but after spinning on the second lap, he rejoined in 14th position and began a superb fight back, bringing the Ferrari Maranello up to 3rd position at the time that the refueling stop took place.
A wise but stubborn race from Domenico Guagliardo allowed him to reclaim the first place ten laps from the end. He proceeded to keep his opponents at bay in order to claim JMB Racing's second win in the 2004 Italian Championship, following the first round of the season in Imola.
Next race on May 16th in Mugello.
