Eric De Doncker at the wheel of the Ford Mustang GT3 Multimatic !
Not content with having competed in the recently created GT4 European Cup at the wheel of the gleaming Ford Mustang FR500 GT entered by the Thermosulit Motorsport 98 team (pole position in Silverstone), Eric De Doncker decided to double the stakes by competing in the European FIA-GT3 championship at the wheel of the GT3 version of the American muscle car. Unfortunately the major debut at the RAC Tourist Trophy did not come up to expectations, with the car still in its initial stages of development which penalised it heavily when up against the perfectly tuned competition.
Team Topspeed was not present for the second round at Bucharest, but Multimatic, the team of Canadian origins working directly for the Ford works, decided to speed up the tuning process of the Mustang GT3. And last week, the young American driver Gunnar Jeannette was at Donington, to clock up some miles. The technical debriefing was pretty positive, major progress having been made in the field of the front axle unit and the aerodynamics of this highly attractive Mustang. Having workshops close to the Snetterton circuit, Multimatic decided to go one step further in the development of the Mustang FR500 GT by competing in both rounds of the British GT championship next weekend, being held on this very same Snetterton track.
And to team up with Gunnar Jeannette, who seems to be thoroughly enjoying Europe, none other than.....Eric De Doncker, the Thermosulit driver! "I reckon my pole position at Silverstone, in GT4, ahead of Jeannette, obviously clinched it for me ", the Belgian commented."Multimatic did in fact ask me to team up with Gunnar at Snetterton. I'm very honoured by this. All I need to do is turn up and drive; they will look after all the rest. I must admit that I'm looking forward to do battle on this English track. I'll be able to judge at first hand and in the heat of the action the improvements made to the beast, all highly useful and encouraging for the future ."
And as for the Topspeed team, they will also be able to use the race as a test bed during the next round of the Belcar, prior to the 12 Hours of Spa. "It is still very much a project at the moment, but I'm very keen. We need to find some partners to finalise matters, but seeing the level of the Belcar this season, the national GT3 championship, the presence of the Ford Mustang will not go unnoticed. Topspeed is fully aware that the Belcar grid is highly competitive, and this should give us the necessary pointers prior to considering the next round of the FIA-GT3 at the end of June on the Monza circuit ."
We will now be able to appreciate Eric De Doncker wearing two hats, but always Mustang shaped, in the days to come. All those impatiently awaiting the return of the Thermosulit driver competing in races for modern cars will be thoroughly spoilt.
