Nuerburg/Quierschied, 23.08.2009. [ADAC GT Masters] Christian Hohenadel briefly missed his second victory of the season at the ADAC GT Masters race at the Nuerburgring. The Sunday's second race, Hohenadel had a clear lead of seven seconds halfway trough the race with his Callaway Competition-Corvette Z06.R. Then a drive- trough-penalty after a mistake of this teammate cost the victory. Together with his teammate Toni Seiler, the 32-year old German finished fourth in both races in front of 20.000 spectators, closing the gap to championship leader Christian Abt (Audi).
In the first 60-minute race held on Saturday, Hohenadel took the yellow Callaway-Corvette over in tenth position from Toni Seiler. With a strong chase, Hohenadel was the quickest driver in the second part of the race and chased trough the field. Until the end of the race, Hohenadel passed six competitors and climbed as high as fourth, missing the podium only briefly.
Things developed even better in the second race on Sunday, held just the before the 1000km Le Mans Series main event. Hohenadel started third, and took second place already in the first lap. He chased the leader, his teammate Marc Hennerici, and subsequently took the lead in the fourth lap. With lap times on GT2-level in his GT3-machine, including the fasted lap of the race, Christian built a solid lead of seven second. But then a mistake of Toni Seiler, who took over the Corvette for the reaming 25 Minutes of the race, cost the victory. When the Swiss sportscar veteran left the pits, he crossed the white line at pit exit. This caused a drove trough penalty, which let the Corvette drop down to fourth and eventually would cost the victory. "I'm really sorry for Christian, because my stupid mistake cost us the victory after he drove so brilliant in the beginning of the race," Toni Seiler said afterwards.
"Even if we lost the victory on Sunday, I'm still satisfied with the weekend," Christian Hohenadel said. "With a weight penalty of 30kg due to our win at the last round, I was able to lap the quickest times in both races. With our two fourth places, we made up ground to championship leader Christian Abt. The performance of our Corvette was brilliant. The fight with my teammate Marc Hennerici at the beginning of the second race was fair, I knew he always braked a bit earlier in the last corner before start/finish, so I took advantage of this and overtook him in lap four."
In the championship, Hohenadel gained one position and is now fourth. With four races to go, the Callaway-Corvette-driver is 12 points behind championship leader, former DTM-driver Christian Abt (Audi)
The next round of the ADAC GT Masters will take place from 18.09. -- 20.09.09 at the scenic Sachsenring. Hohenadel is quite confident for the penultimate round: „I took the win at the Sachsenring round last year and we will start without weight penalty. So I'm really looking forward to the Sachsenring."
