Joe Sahlen named Grand Marshal for historic endurance race
Watkins Glen, NY (June 18, 2003) - Watkins Glen International President Craig Rust announced today that Joe Sahlen will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race, which is part of the Sahlen's Sports Car Grand Prix weekend, June 20-22. Sahlen, the President of Sahlen Packing Company, is the great-grandson of company founder Joseph Sahlen and has worked in all phases of the family business since he was a youngster. Continuing the family tradition of the company, Sahlen's oldest son, Joe, has taken an active role in the company.
"Joe has been a sports car racing fan for many years and we area pleased to welcome him to The Glen, not only as a title sponsor, but also as a Grand Marshal," said Rust. "We are very excited to have a local company like Sahlen's as a partner on this event weekend that continues to grow."
Sahlen Packing Company was founded in 1869 in Buffalo, New York as a family business. Sahlen's great grandfather Joseph founded the company on the one guiding principle that only the freshest and highest quality meat products would bear the proud Sahlen name. Over the company's 130+ year history, Sahlen's has grown to become Western New York's leading producer of premium meats including smokehouse hot dogs, deli ham, deli turkey, Italian sausage and other quality deli meat products.
"As a longtime Watkins Glen fan, I am delighted to serve as Grand Marshal for the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen and say those famous words everyone loves to hear - "Drivers, start your engines," said Sahlen. "Watkins Glen has been the site of many great sports car races and I'm looking forward to being a part of the weekend."
A new era in sports car racing hits The Glen as the all-new Daytona Prototype makes its debut as part of the Rolex Sports Car Series in the Sahlen's Sports Car Grand Prix, June 20-22. There's plenty of action scheduled for the weekend, highlighted by the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen on Sunday. Leading up to the main event, you won't want to miss the two action-packed Grand-Am Cup races on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Tickets start at only $30 and are still available.
