Miracle Motorsports on the podium at The Glen.
(June 23, 2002) With a qualifying position of 4th place for Sunday's 6-Hour SportsCar Grand Prix at the Glen, the driving team of John Macaluso, Buddy Rice, and James Gue were rewarded with a well-deserved and hard earned second place finish in Watkins Glen, NY.
With this return to the esteemed Watkins Glen International Speedway, it marked the anniversary of a very nasty incident here last year. The Miracle Motorsports drivers and crew had a real monkey to get off of their backs. This year it wasn't going to come easy either.
Running within the top 3 for nearly 2/3 of the race, the car seemed near flawless. Buddy Rice (Phoenix, AZ) began his first of three stints in the car from the green flag. James Gue (Roswell, GA) stepped in for his double-stint around lap 30. The #6 Miracle Motorsports Ford was already in 3rd place. Rice began his second stint at lap 83. Fifty laps into this stint, Rice radioed in that there may be a problem with the right front tire. Less than half of a lap from that transmission, the bolt in the right front suspension broke.
The Miracle crew went to work, replaced the broken bolt in an 8 minute pit stop, and sent the #6 Ford on its way, with team owner/driver, John Macaluso (Old Forge, NY/Winter Haven,FL) at the wheel. The incident sent the Miracle Ford back to 6th place overall. Macaluso, after finishing his stint, then turned the wheel back over to Rice for the final stint of the 6-Hour event, handing the car back to Rice in the 5th place.
Rice piloted the car back up to 2nd position in the SRP class, for the best finish to date for the Miracle Motorsports team, awarding the drivers with a podium finish. "The guys all worked so hard to get this car to this point," stated Macaluso, "and it has certainly paid off. This was James' first race in an SRP car, and he did a splendid job. Buddy, once again, has done a superb job as well! It's a good day for the Miracle Team!!"
