Last Call for Championship Contenders at Watkins Glen
INDIANAPOLIS (September 20, 2005) -- With 11 rounds of Rolex Sports Car Series action in the books, CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates returns for a third and final time this weekend to Watkins Glen International, still mathematically in the hunt to defend their second straight Grand American title.
After already logging a combined 225 orbits of the 3.4-mile (long) and 2.45-mile (short) courses this season in their previous two visits to Thunder Road, Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz can only hope for an upturn in fortune after a 16th place DNF in Phoenix in Round 10. They'll attempt to knock championship point leader SunTrust Racing off their lofty perch with a hefty 36 marker advantage (344-308).
The no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley enjoyed its best finish at The Glen in June's 6-hour edition with a podium finish of third. The second visit for the team resulted in another top-five drive, but CompUSA co-driver Diaz hopes the final 74 laps (2:45) of the 299-lap season trifecta at Watkins Glen will end in Victory Lane.
"It's now or never for us in the championship," said the second-year Ganassi pilot Diaz. "After the setback in Phoenix we suffered, it will be tough to get back within reach of the championship with only three races to go. They [SunTrust] have been performing very well this year. We just have to do our best and hope to sneak back into the hunt."
The wiser, more experienced member of the Ganassi tandem will spearhead the teams' efforts in New York, having notched a pole position and a race win in two triumphant trips to The Glen last season.
"This place is becoming a second home to me you could say," said Pruett, who will be running his fifth race at Watkins Glen this season after driving in June's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series events. "It's going to be an uphill climb for the CompUSA car to get back in the hunt, but we have the team and resources to do it. We'll obviously need some luck to come our way as well, so we'll see what unfolds on Saturday."
Fans of CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates can catch the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley in action at the Crown Royal 250 at The Glen Saturday, September 24th (LIVE, SPEED Channel, 3:00 pm ET) at Watkins Glen International for Round 12 of the Rolex Sports Car Series.
