Watkins Glen Qualifying Rained Out...
Starting Positions Set By Points
Watkins Glen, NY (August 16, 2004) - The SunTrust Racing team will start from the front row for Friday's Sahlen's 200 at The Glen. Rain prevented the Grand American Sports Car Series cars from qualifying Thursday at Watkins Glen International, setting the starting field by point standings.
Series point leaders Max Papis and Scott Pruett will start from the pole position. The #10 SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley Mk.11 of Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli will start from the second position.
Wayne Taylor (starting driver) - "I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get to qualify, but at least we're guaranteed to start on the front row because we are second in team points. I hope everyone will be sensible going into Turn One tomorrow. It's a long race and I hope everyone remembers that at the first turn. It should be a good race."
Max Angelelli - "It's a pity that we didn't get to qualify. Wayne could have won the pole position. But that is the rule and it is the same for everyone. We will start on the front row, so that's not bad. It can only be a one-stop race. We will run very hard. This is my first time on the short course at Watkins Glen. It's a mixture of slow and fast. It's very pretty here and I like it."
Practice Session #1: The SunTrust Racing team ran at the top the entire session. They worked on set-up and tire grip for the expected rainy race. Final fastest time was 1:16.804, fifth overall in the session.
Practice Session #2: The SunTrust Racing team continued to top of the charts for most of the session. They finished with a 1:08.683 for the second fastest spot.
The Sahlen's 200 at The Glen two-hour race will be televised at 10:00 p.m. on Speed TV Friday night.
