Michael Shank Racing taking podium momentum to Watkins Glen
(Columbus, OH)- 9 August 05-- Michael Shank Racing scored their second podium of the 2005 Rolex Sports Car Series season in the last round at Barber Motorsports Park, and is looking to keep the momentum going through the second half of the season as the team prepares to race again this week in the CompUSA 200 at the Glen this Friday. The race is the second of three visits to the Watkins Glen facility for the Rolex series joins the big NASCAR event, which will see both the Busch and NEXTEL Cup Series racing during the weekend.
Paul Mears Jr., who teamed with Mike Borkowski to take the team's first podium of the season at California Speedway earlier this year, will be back in the cockpit of the Pontiac-powered Riley for the race, which is scheduled to get underway beginning at 6:00 EST on Friday.
The team qualified fifth in the series' last visit to the picturesque upstate New York track for the 'Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen,' but contact knocked the car out of the race early, so the team is looking to take care of some unfinished business this time around.
"We are happy that Paul is back with us again this weekend, and this track is definitely one he is strong on, so hopefully we'll be strong again and can get another good points finish to keep moving up in the championship," said team owner Mike Shank. "We had a good car there at the 6 Hour, but we didn't catch any breaks and weren't able to finish the race, so we are really hungry to get to the finish here this week."
The growing team, which scored a finish of second-place in this event last season, moved into the top-ten in the championship standings after the Barber race and is hoping to keep the momentum going as they race in front of a large audience that the NASCAR weekend at the Glen attracts.
"Racing with the NASCAR guys is a great opportunity for us because I think it's a good way to keep growing this sport, exposing Rolex to a whole new group of race fans," said Shank. "The show that we put on is really exciting and there always are good battles going on all the way through the field, and once people see it first hand, I think it's difficult for them not to want to see more."
The condensed schedule will see practice start at 11:00 am EST on Thursday, with qualifying setting the grid in a fifteen-minute session beginning at 3:45 PM, as a final practice session will take place at 7:00 PM on Thursday.
