Cosmo Heading Home Friday night
There's really nothing like coming home, and Spirit of Daytona Racing driver Guy Cosmo is relishing that feeling this week as the Rolex Sports Car Series heads to Watkins Glen in upstate New York for round eleven of the 2008 championship season.
Even though Cosmo is a native Long Islander, he's long considered the Glen to be his home track, having raced at the famous facility for years in everything from formula cars to Daytona Prototypes.
The Crown Royal 200 at the Glen round is expected to be the final 2008 race outing for the No. 09 machine as the Sprit of Daytona Racing V8-Porsche --powered Coyote is slated to be taking a break for development following this weekends Friday night shootout. Cosmo is hoping to end this chapter out with a solid result as he looks ahead to what's next.
The 2008 season has seen some highlights for Cosmo, including outstanding qualifying performances in Homestead and Barber Motorsports Park. Cosmo, who when not racing, also keeps busy full-time as a driver coach and with his Cosmo-Sport operations, managing track day programs for customers on a variety of circuits around the country, and is hoping to still stay busy in the closing races of the Rolex Sports Car Series season.
"Troy (Flis) knows that all I want to do is race, and he's given me the ok to race any race that Spirit of Daytona isn't competing in with someone else if that opportunity develops," said Cosmo. "We are working on our plans for next year and I have to say that with the progress we've made with this V8 Porsche-powered Coyote, I think that package is going to come out very strong in 2009 and I'd like to see some of the fruits of our labor this year next season. Hopefully that works out, but in the mean time we are hoping to get a great result to close things out this weekend at the Glen."
The racing action won't stop at the end of Friday night's Daytona Protoype race, as Cosmo will jet West to be a part of the Iowa Speedway round of KONI Challenge competition. Cosmo is the first driver to ever win a race on the track, and he's looking forward to teaming with Shane Lewis on Sunday.
"I have been so focused on the Daytona Prototype program that I haven't had the chance to run KONI challenge this year so I am really excited that Fountain invited me back out to run in Iowa," said Cosmo. "Teaming with Shane, we should be a threat come race time, so I am really looking forward to the race. It'd be great to get a win streak going there!"
