The Spirit of Daytona never got a chance to test the 09 Pontiac-powered Daytona Prototype (DP) in dry conditions on Saturday Oct. 8. The wet and humid weather kept the racetrack full of puddles and canceled the 1:10PM qualifying session. The DPs and GTs combined the two 15 minute qualifying sessions into one-half hour practice session. The weather conditions caused potential danger for the high-speed lap times the DPs would be turning during qualifying.

For the race start, teams will determine their starting positions based on team points. The 09 Spiralz/Speedcom/Chemcraft sponsored DP, will be starting off the VIR 400 from a position of 15th. During the last practice session the 09 DP did not stay out the full one-half hour because the back part of the track started accumulating more water and the DP did not have rain tires on. Doug Goad was driving the 09 DP and turned a total of five laps.

" We wanted to see how the car would perform with slicks on in dry conditions. After a handful of laps we realized that was not going to happen today. It was getting dangerous trying to race the car without the rain tires on and we didn't have time to switch them out," said Goad over the radio as he drove the DP into the pit. During the last practice session the slippery track caused a GT car to crash and the team decided to save the 09 DP from potential damage and bring it back to the garage.

"The 09 DP is setup great for wet conditions but we only had a few laps on a dry track. We have a decent dry track setup, but we will have to wait and hope that the final practice session tomorrow morning will be free from rain," quoted Troy Flis, team owner/manager.

Co-driver, French Canadian, Marc Antoine Camirand missed the wet practice sessions because he was in Montreal for his older sister Marianna's wedding. He will be back at VIR on Sunday to join up with the Spirit of Daytona and race at 1:00PM.
