Rolex Series Will Return to Watkins Glen International for a Pair of Races in 2006
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (September 23, 2005) -- The 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series schedule continues to form up as Grand American President Roger Edmondson and Watkins Glen International President Craig Rust today announced that the Rolex Series will contest two events at the historic upstate New York facility next year.
Taking a page from Watkins Glen history, the first Rolex Series visit will be the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen on Saturday, June 3 and will run in conjunction with Sunday's Indy Racing League IndyCar Series event, with whom the Rolex Series is also racing this weekend. From 1969 through 1981, Watkins Glen International featured a mid-summer race weekend with a six-hour sports car race on Saturday and a Can-Am or Formula 5000 sprint race on Sunday.
"Pairing our Sahlen's Six Hour event with the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix is a natural and embraces our racing heritage and tradition," Rust said. "We feel that this weekend will be a huge hit with our fans as we bring them both world class sports car racing and IndyCar racing in one weekend."
The second Rolex Series event will be the Crown Royal 200 on the evening Friday, August 11 as part of the annual NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series weekend at Watkins Glen. In a departure from previous years, however, next year's Crown Royal 200 will be a Daytona Prototype-only event. The race is once again expected to include stars from NEXTEL Cup in addition to many of the world's best sports car racers.
"Watkins Glen has such a storied history and we are proud to continue that tradition in 2006," Edmondson said. "To be part of the two biggest weekends at Watkins Glen International once again next year is a tremendous honor. We are confident that both weekends will be extremely well-attended, and both Rolex Series races will feature the kind of close competition and excitement that has become our hallmark. Watkins Glen will play a major role on what we expect to be our best schedule yet."
Today's announcement brings the running total of confirmed 2006 dates to eight. The announced dates include the Rolex 24 At Daytona (January 26-29), Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (May 5-7), the Lime Rock Park weekend for the Rolex Series GT class and the Grand-Am Cup Series (May 27-29), Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen (June 2-3), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (June 23-25), Crown Royal 200 (August 10-11), Infineon Raceway (August 24-26) and Miller Motorsports Park (August 31-September 2). Additional events--as well as a complete 2006 schedule--will be announced in the near future.
