Tim George and Spencer Pumpelly Sign with TRG for 2008 Rolex GT
December 7, 2007- When New York City native Tim George, Jr. decided to try his hand in Motorsports at the age of 24, few would have thought that only three years later he would already be driving in one of the ultimate ranks of professional sports car racing.
"It actually all started when I worked in a catering business with the Ferrari Challenge series. I thought I wanted to be in the restaurant business, but the racing bug bit me! The sport grew on me, and I immediately signed up for the Skip Barber Racing school," stated George.
With impressive early results, Tim moved on after his first full Skip Barber season in 2005, taking third place in class. During 2006 he won five races in the Skip Barber Eastern series, taking second place overall, and caught the eye of many people in Grand-Am. Despite the light frame and low horsepower of the Skip Barber cars, he learned a lot very quickly about race craft. Tim was signed on to compete in the Koni Challenge Series in 2007, where he earned five top-tens and a top-five finish among some of the best sportscar drivers in the world. With an impressive run in 2007, it made sense for the 27 year old to make the next step up to TRG's Rolex GT program.
"All of us at TRG are excited to have Tim on board for 2008. With several strong seasons under his belt and an impressive learning curve, he has stepped it up to our GT program" stated the very enthusiastic team owner Kevin Buckler. "He is extremely fit and focused on the tasks ahead for 2008. Tim is going to bring a number of strengths to our organization and will become a valuable member of the sales and marketing team back at the office. Spencer and Tim will be a strong force, competing for wins every time they hit the track this season."
Tim has the ability to focus on the task at hand, weather it be racing or business. He earned a BA in English, and a double minor in History and Economics from the University of Miami. He brings an understanding that one would rarely expect from a professional racing driver. In fact, Tim has recently moved out to Sonoma County, becoming a full-time member of TRG's inner team.
"Racing has become a huge part of my life, but I really want to internalize the business side as well. I have to thank TRG for the opportunity to become a well-rounded part of their organization. Through Kevin and the guys back at the shop, I'm learning about how the industry operates. With Spencer Pumpelly as my co-driver, I know we'll be competitive at the track this season," stated TRG's newest recruit Tim George, Jr.
The combination of Tim George, Jr. and the 2006 Daytona 24-Hour Winner Spencer Pumpelly will be tough to beat in their number 67 Porsche GT3 Cup 997. For Spencer Pumpelly, this is the best opportunity he has had to make a strong bid at the title.
"I am extremely excited to be working with Tim in 2008," stated Pumpelly. "I was really impressed with his performance in last year's Koni Challenge series and his first Rolex race at Barber, and I think in 2008 we have a really good shot at some strong results."
With 2008 quickly approaching, both Tim and Spencer have already been working closely together during our test days.
"The Rolex GT category has been an extremely fruitful one for us over the last several years," explained Kevin Buckler. "Tim and Spencer bring youth, aggression, and enthusiasm to our team, and I know our guys will provide them with the best equipment out there, so we're expecting big things next year."
