With radiant Florida sunshine bathing the 3.56-mile, 14-turn Daytona International Speedway road course, open-wheel star Paul Tracy led at the conclusion of the first hour of the 44th Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Tracy started 12th in the Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing with MSR Lexus Riley and patiently worked his way into the top-three within the race's first 45 minutes, assuming the lead when pole sitter Lucas Luhr and second place Jan Lammers made their first pit stops. Tracy is sharing the car with Paul Mears, Jr., Mike Borkowski, and Ken Wilden.

Oswaldo Negri, who started fifth in the Michael Shank Racing Lexus Riley, was second, followed by Max Angelelli in the SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley, Terry Borcheller in the Doran Racing Ford Doran, and Ryan Dalziel in the Pacific Coast Motorsports Pontiac Riley.

Luhr led convincingly from the start of the race, opening up a sizable gap on second place starter Scott Dixon in the early laps. But the German fell to 17th after his stop.

Two cautions slowed the race near the end of the first hour, but the first lap calamity that many predicted never materialized. During the second caution, Scott Pruett drove the No. 01 Ganassi Racing Lexus Riley into the garage with a plug wire problem, returning to the track a short time later.

Notably, Andy Wallace in the Howard-Boss Motorsports Pontiac Crawford was running 14th and Jam Lammers, sharing a Pontiac Crawford with Allan McNish, Danica Patrick and Rusty Wallace, was 21st.

In the GT class, Wolf Henzler, driving the No. 72 Tafel Racing Porsche, was leading the No. 36 TPC Racing Porsche of Randy Pobst and the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 of Sylvain Tremblay.
