TAFEL DRIVERS WIN PORSCHE CUP AWARDS
CUMMING, Ga. - Two of Tafel Racing's drivers were recognized at the Porsche Motorsports Awards Banquet in Weissach, Germany last Saturday night. The Porsche Cup, which has been awarded since 1970, recognizes the achievements of the most successful Porsche drivers in privately run race cars in several different racing series, including Grand American. Factory drivers, by their own decision are not eligible for this award.
First place winner of the Porsche Cup was German native Wolf Henzler, who drover the 72 Tafel Racing Porsche GT3 Cup throughout the 2006 Grand American season, winning four class victories and finishing second in the driver's championship along with co-driver Robin Liddell. "It is great honor for me to win the Porsche Cup," said Henzler. "In the past there were some great race car drivers winning this Cup. This award shows me that I had a successful year in motorsport. I also must say thank you to Tafel Racing which gave me the opportunity and a well prepared race car to win the Porsche Cup." The Cup winner receives the sought-after silver-gold trophy as well as 37,000 Euros ($48,100) in prize money. The Porsche Cup is endowed with prize money totalling 153,000 Euros ($198,900).
Liddell, a Scotsman who currently resides in the UK, placed fourth in the Porsche Cup awards despite competing in only one series championship. "Naturally I am really happy to be placed fourth in the Porsche Cup, said Liddell. "It is a real privilege to receive an award at the Porsche Banquet, which is a prestigious function where so many great drivers and teams have gone before. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out, because although we had a successful season in the Grand Am Series with Tafel Racing, I only really did the one championship this year."
Team owner Jim Tafel took great pride in the fact that two of the team's drivers were being recognized with an award that has previously gone to some of the greatest names in racing. "Both Wolf and Robin did an outstanding job for us last season and this award just shows everyone their level of skill and professionalism. They're good friends and great teammates and I'm proud to work with them."
