Daytona Beach, Fla. – Looking to build momentum as the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series enters the final four-race sprint to the end of the season, Spirit of Daytona Racing returns to Road America for the VISITFLORIDA.com Sports Car 250 for Round 9 of the championship this weekend.
Drivers Ricky Taylor and Richard Westbrook will look to improve on the team’s sixth place result at Indianapolis Motor Speedway two weeks ago which saw the No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.com Corvette leading early in the race and running in podium position as the race entered its final stages. But a long green flag run in the waning laps did not favor the Spirit of Daytona Racing entry and the team took home sixth at the finish.
The legendary 4.048-mile Wisconsin road course is a driver favorite and both Westbrook and Taylor are eager to return to race action. Westbrook claimed class honors when he won the ALMS event held at the track in 2008 while driving a GT2 Porsche. He finished eighth for Spirit of Daytona Racing in last year’s race.
Taylor claimed the pole and drove to a third place result at the track while driving for Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR) in GRAND-AM’s return to Road America in 2011 and returned last year with WTR to finish seventh.
Spirit of Daytona Racing has earned four top-five finishes this year, including a podium of third at Barber Motorsports Park. The group targets a return to the podium on Saturday as the team looks to gain ground in the championship through the final four GRAND-AM rounds.“This is a big weekend, with GRAND-AM racing on the same weekend as ALMS and Road America is just one of those races that all the drivers look forward to,” said team owner Troy Flis. “This is a track where Chevrolet really activates their partnerships, and of course with VISITFLORIDA.com stepping up as the sponsor for the race, we couldn’t be more motivated to have a strong run this weekend.
Ricky and Westy know this place pretty well, so if we can get the car where they need it to be, hopefully we can be in good shape.”
The VISITFLORIDA.com Sports Car 250 weekend opens on Thursday with practice for the Rolex Series. Saturday will see a morning practice followed by qualifying. The 2.75-hour race is set to begin at 5:00 PM (ET) on Saturday.
