Canadian driver surges forward during stint

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO Travis Walker showed in the ST class he had the speed and patience required to win in the very competitive Koni Challenge Series. Since joining Blackforest Motorsports 2 months ago, moving him up to the GS class, Walker has once again proven he is ready to race at the top levels of the sport. In the most recent round at Watkins Glen last weekend, and being his first time racing this track, Walker showed why he is one of the brightest young talents around.

Walker's teammate, Valerie Limoges, had qualified well and started the race. Due to a faulty radio, she was a lap late under yellow in pitting, and handing the car off to Walker for his stint at the Glen. This meant Walker had to go to the end of the line as all the other cars had stopped - he lined up 31st for the restart. Thirty minutes into his stint, Walker had moved his Blackforest Mustang up to 12th place, passing 2 to 3 cars each lap, when another full course caution came out.

"It was the break I was looking for," Walker said. "This let the pack reform, and I knew I had the speed and the car to move up the standings."

Walker got a good jump on the restart, moving up three spots to ninth. "I just got going and then another yellow came out," Walker said. "I knew it was going to be crazy from now on because there was only four minutes left in the race."

On the final restart, Walker moved to fifth by the final lap, and was then pushed off the track. "It was the way I expected on the last lap," Walker said. "I just got control of the car, and never gave up. I wanted the best finish possible for our team."

Walker was able to get going again and finish the race in 10th place overall. "For sure the fifth would have been better, but given the circumstances, I am happy with the 10th place. I am coming to terms with the Mustang, which is much different than the RSX I had before, so I am confident that podium finishes are not far away for us."

Walker's next race will be at Barber Motorsports Park on July 19-22.
