Still Knocking On the Door
Watkins Glen, NY (July 5, 2008) - What started out as another strong run again ended in frustration for the #181 APR Motorsports team Saturday at the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series race at Watkins Glen. The Volkswagen GTI showed great promise with fast times in practice, including a first position in the final practice session the morning of the race. Knowing Randy's history of success at the Glen, with four consecutive wins in another series, the team was excited.
Co-driver Mark White had a fast qualifying run and started in the fourth position. Mark moved into third and turned the fastest lap in the race. He stayed in contention for the lead until a caution fell and the team decided to pit. Randy, the so-called Mayor of Watkins Glen, hopped into the car and quickly moved into first. But it was not to be.
"I was holding a four second lead with one hour to go, driving with my fingers crossed, and the motor suddenly lost power; no smoke, no warning. I limped it in but was unable to continue. It was just not our day. The APR team is knocking on the door for a win so hard we are practically breaking it down. We made a real significant improvement on the handling this week. It's more fun to drive which is always good."
Lightning struck APR Motorsports this week. All three cars were in contention when they met their demise within 10 minutes of each other; one power failure, one missed shift and one crash. The ChaseCam caught teammate Ian Baas' misfortune when he was run in to while attempting to avoid an accident in front him. One high point this weekend was the stellar performance of Randy's associate, Aaron Povoledo who qualified on the pole and led the race throughout his stint, co-driving with Ian in the #171.
"I would like to thank my personal sponsors Team Janica Racing, Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, ChaseCam, and saferacer.com for their continued support."
The Watkins Glen KONI Challenge race will not be aired on TV. Randy's next race will be back at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course July 18-20 with the World Challenge GT series.
