WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 6, 2009) - Randy, aka "The Mayor of Watkins Glen", returned to his favorite track Friday and left with a podium! The Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner race at Watkins Glen International started out with numerous cautions for incidents and ended in a misty rain. Randy and co-driver Christian Miller were able to avoid trouble in their Compass360 Racing #74 Honda Civic Si and finished second behind Randy's former teammates Dion von Moltke and Mike Sweeney in the APR Motorsport Volkswagen.
Christian started out the morning with a third place qualifying position and stayed out near the front. Randy got into the car early under one of the caution periods and worked his way towards the lead. The chances of a win looked very good. Under a late race caution, the Grand Am officials temporarily misidentified the ST leaders. In the confusion among the officials and the team, who were working on the crash-damaged 75 car, Randy almost missed a wave-by, frustratingly losing positions to five strong competitors that he had arduously worked his way around in the last hour. Randy was able to get past all but the winning Volkswagen in the remaining laps. The second place finish kept Christian in the points lead.
"This was another close and thrilling race. Just killer competition and racing. We were in position to win and I was having visions of being the Mayor of Watkins Glen again. I almost had that kid but the turbo just had too much poke off the corners. Our Honda Civic Si was quick at the apex but you can't pass at the apex. We were so gonna win it but the wave by confusion really hurt our chances."
"The light rain was really challenging and frightening and an advantage to me. I love challenging conditions. The traction was different in every corner every time. I am very pleased with the level of preparation of the Compass360 team. Christian has extended his points lead and an important reason for that is the reliability and the consistent good handling setup of the Honda Civic. I would like to congratulate my former teammates Dion and Mike and the APR team on their first win. I would also like to thank my personal sponsors Team Janica Racing, WeatherTech, Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, ChaseCam, and saferacer.com. Their support greatly contributes to the success of my racing career."
The Watkins Glen race will be televised on June 14 at 2:00 PM on SPEED. DVR, Tivo...don't miss it! The next race for the KONI Challenge will be June 20 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Randy's next World Challenge GT race will be at Watkins Glen on July 4.
