Villaconn Teams to Promote Grand Am Weekend
Watkins Glen, NY, May 16, 2001:

There isn't a soul on the Villaconn BMW Motorsports team that doesn't love to race just for the joy of racing. Team owners and Grand Am Cup driving partners, Al Villamil and Matt Connolly, showed up early for the Watkins Glen weekend to help Grand Am promote the race activities. The pair competed, along with other Grand Am Cup and Rolex Sports Car Series drivers as well as local drivers and Grand Am Officials, in a three hour karting event.

Teamed with local karting ace, Chris Gabers, Team Lexus', Rick Fairbanks, Speedsource's, David Tuaty and G&W Motorsport's, Darren Law, Villamil and Connolly's karting team took top honors at the KG Motors Slick Track. The team, known as The Grand Am Cup Carburetors, faced tough competition on the 200ft x 80ft oval. The entry list looked like a virtual who's-who of sportscar racing. Entries included 2001 Rolex 24 Hour Winner, Andy Lally, 2000 SRP2 Champion, Larry Oberto and the man no one wanted to rub fenders with - Grand Am President, Roger "The Boss" Edmondson.

"We really believe in the Grand Am formula," explains Villamil. "Events like this are a great way to get the public involved with the race weekend. And we will always do what we can to join forces with our fellow competitors to help promote the series."

This was the second year the event was held in the lead up to the Six Hours of Watkins Glen. You can almost bet that the Grand Am Carburetors will be back next year to defend their title. These guys just love to compete!
