Becker teams up with SRG in the KONI Challenge GS Race at Mazda Raceway
Southern California KONI Challenge driver, Ernie Becker, will be reunited with 2005 South Paw Racing teammate, Mike Halpin for this weekend's GS race at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Becker and Halpin will be racing in the No. 11 BMW M-3 on Sunday, May 20th at 9:15 AM under the team banner of SRG (Southwest Racers Group).
Mike Halpin, team owner and driver of SRG has been running a limited 2006 and 2007 schedule with the BMW M3. This will be the team's second race of the season in the KONI Challenge. After the season opener at Daytona, Halpin decided to spend the winter and spring testing the No. 11 race car near the team's shop in Phoenix. The team will be coming into the Laguna race with more data than ever before and are expecting great results. SRG is also entering a BMW 330ci in the ST race this weekend and Halpin will be co-driver as well. The combined time on track will benefit both cars for the upcoming races. After the Laguna race the team's next scheduled race will be at Mid-Ohio on June 23.
This will be Becker's second race of the season but he has had a tremendous amount of time on the Lauguna Seca track. "I know the track pretty well but right now I am still getting a handle for the car." Becker raced a Mazda RX-8 with Halpin in 2005 and is used to a similar styled car. Becker's last KONI Challenge race was the Fresh from Florida 200 at Daytona in a Porsche. "The BMW is a little heavier than the type of car I have been racing in. But I am looking forward to the race this weekend and doing my part to get the car up front. Halpin and I were teammates in 2005 and it is great working with him again. The opportunity to race with him was extremely last minute and I am happy that everything has come together so nicely."
The teammates took advantage of the Promoter's Test Day on Thursday and were able to start perfecting the car's setup for the Sunday race. "You can really see the improvements on the car after we spent so much time testing this past spring. I have nothing but confidence going into the race with the No. 11 car. We are going into this race as if it is the first one of the season," said Halpin. SRG will be carrying the momentum from this race into the rest of the 2007 season.
