Grand-Am Cup racer moves into Winston Cup ride for Watkins Glen race.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 26, 2002) - Grand-Am Cup racer Shane Lewis will slide behind the wheel of a different 'Cup' car at Watkins Glen International in August. This time he will be racing a NASCAR Winston Cup car in the Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen. Lewis, who is currently 10th in Grand Sport I driver standings, will make his Winston Cup debut in the Otto Motorsports Ford Taurus, a special tribute car to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the first NASCAR event held at Watkins Glen.
"Even though this will be my first Winston Cup race, my experience in sports car racing and many events at Watkins Glen will be of great help. I still have a lot to learn about how NASCAR does things," noted Lewis. "My advantage is that I'm not a sports car driver in a NASCAR Winston Cup car. I'm a racer. If it has wheels and a checkered flag, I'm there."
Lewis has piloted the Planet Earth Motorsports #43 Corvette with Joe Nonnamaker throughout this year's Grand-Am Cup season. The duo captured the checkered flag at the UnitedAuto Sport 250 in Phoenix last April and has positioned the team into sixth place in the Team Owner standings. However, Lewis' stint in Winston Cup will force him to miss the sixth round of the Grand-Am Cup season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
"I was looking forward to Mid-Ohio not only because it is a great facility, but it is also the team's home track. After our win at Phoenix we have had a little bit of bad luck, and I knew we would bring it all together for this event," remarked Lewis. "I wish the team the best of luck and look forward to being back in the seat at Virginia."
Though the Planet Earth team will miss their lead driver during the 2.5-hour race at Mid-Ohio, Nonnamaker is happy for his co-driver. "Shane is an integral part of our team. We are thrilled that he has this opportunity and wish him the best. Shane helped bring our first victory in Grand Sport, and we are looking forward to continuing our success with him after Mid-Ohio."
Even though Lewis will be away from his team during the weekend, he will be surrounded by plenty of familiar faces at Watkins Glen. The Rolex Sports Car Series will share the weekend with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series at The Glen. In addition to racing in Grand-Am Cup, Lewis has also spent time behind the wheel of a Rolex Series car, including six Rolex 24 At Daytona appearances.
Lewis will pilot the Otto Motorsports Ford Taurus in qualifying for the Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen on Friday, Aug. 9, which will be followed by the Rolex Series Bully Hill Vineyards 250. Tickets for the Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen and Bully Hill Vineyards 250 are available online at www.theglen.com. Grand-Am Cup will race at Mid-Ohio during the CART Grand Prix on Aug. 10, and tickets are available for the event online at www.midohio.com.
