Gainesville, GA (June 1, 2010) - As previously reported, Randy had planned to race in Saturday's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner at Lime Rock Park in the #27 Freedom Autosport MAZDASPEED3.
Plans changed when Mazda decided to go with paying drivers for the race, leaving Randy without a ride for the Lime Rock and Watkins Glen races. Randy did travel to Lime Rock to mentor and coach 17-year-old Cooper MacNeil, son of Randy's friend and sponsor David MacNeil of WeatherTech floor mat fame, who competed in his first professional race in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge GS race on Saturday. Cooper and co-driver Gunter Schaldach finished a respectable twelfth out of thirty-two cars in their Fall-Line Motorsports BMW M3 Coupe.
"Due to budgetary constraints, Mazda has now decided to go with paying customers in the MAZDASPEED3 that I was driving with Freedom Autosport. I would like to thank Mazda for the opportunity and hope we can do more together in the future. Unfortunately, the notification was made only two days before the Lime Rock race, so I didn't have time to find another ride for either race. On the bright side, I will have some time at home to pursue other projects."
"Cooper had a great race at Lime Rock in his first time out! He qualified the car in twenty-first and started the race. He did an excellent job keeping the nose clean, turning competitive times and handing the BMW over to Gunter in good condition. It was good to visit with David who flew down on his jet with his girlfriend Kim and Cooper's brother Rod to cheer Cooper on. I'm looking forward to coaching Cooper in the future,"
Randy is still celebrating his victory in the K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 at Mosport International Raceway last week. His next SPEED World Challenge GT race will be July 3 at Watkins Glen International.
