Planet Earth Motorsports announces Grand Am Cup Grand Sports II campaign.
North Canton, OH -- Planet Earth Motorsports announced today their transition from the Grand Sports I category to the Grand Sport II class. In 2002 the team accomplished its goal of winning a Grand-Am Cup race overall with their Orison Marketing - Corvette at the Phoenix round.
For 2003, the race car of choice for Planet Earth Motorsports will be the Porsche 911. The Porsche 911 that Planet Earth Motorsports will be campaigning is not just any ordinary Porsche. It is the #70 SpeedSource Porsche driven by Sylvain Tremblay to the 2001 GS II Championship.
The lead driver for the team will be veteran Joe Nonnamaker. After his GS I victory at Phoenix in a Corvette, Joe used the second half of the 2002 season learning how to drive a Porsche. Joe showed himself a quick study, capturing a first and second place in two consecutive Grand-Am Cup GS I races.
Joe will share the driver's seat of the neon blue and green #41 Porsche with his son, young gun Wayne Nonnamaker. In 2002, the 24 year old driver wrapped up the ST II title with his brother - Will.
"Having Wayne as my co-driver is great," commented Joe Nonnamaker. "Besides getting the chance to drive with my son, Wayne brings two driver championships and lots of experience to the driver seat."
Wayne shared in the enthusiasm: "I am excited about the opportunity to drive with my Dad. He has already won in the Grand Sports classes, so I am sure I will be learning from him in the first few races. I know that we have a lot of learning ahead of us, but I am sure if we take our growth curve patiently, the team will get to where we want to be at the end of 2003."
While the change for the drivers will be major, the crew on the team will also share in a major shift as they move from the Corvette to the Porsche.
"Last year our team completed a three year mission to win with the Corvette," commented Mike Thomas, 2001 Crew Chief of the Year in STII. "Now we are in the next stage of our team's progression, and racing a Porsche in GS II is setting the stage for the years to come."

Planet Earth Motorsports was originated in 1996 with the goal of educating the public about simple, easy solutions to help the environment. The campaign has included the touring ENVIRO EXPO, and the Technician Sample Packets. At each event, the team donates 10% of the race car's prize winnings.
