"We can only get better from here," said Spirit of Daytona GTO crew chief, Todd Flis. The Daytona Mitsubishi/Diamond Suzuki sponsored No. 9 GTO qualified 25th overall in the GS class for the Grand Am Cup at Phoenix. Craig Conway was behind the wheel as the GTO qualified for the Avondale Mazda Twin 200s race on Saturday afternoon. The No. 9 GTO is coming off of its best place all year with a 14th place finish in the last Grand Am Cup race at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The No. 9 GTO will be racing for a top-10 finish with co-drivers Conway and Marc-Antoine Camirand.
French Canadian Camirand decided to stay with Spirit of Daytona during the few days in between the Laguna Seca race and Phoenix. Camirand stepped from behind the steering wheel of the GTO and helped the team prep the car for Grand Am Cup event. "I worked on the GTO these past few days. This helped me understand the car better and it will show on the track. I have a better grasp of the car's handling and suspension." The Quebec native has had plenty of time at the Phoenix track with two class victories in the Formula 2000 Series. " I have won here two times, and I am looking for my fist win on the roval course." The GS Cup race starts with afternoon temperatures in the mid-90's on Saturday afternoon. "It will be hot this Saturday when we start to race but compared to the DP the heat won't get as bad. This car is easier to drive than the DP and I will be able to handle the heat." Camirand took on the desert heat last year in the 09 Daytona Prototype with co-driver Doug Goad in Phoenix.
Unlike his co-driver, Conway flew back to his Edgewater home in Florida and will returned to the South West in time for the practice and qualifying session on Thursday. Conway has also turned many laps at the desert track. While racing with Doug Goad in the 09 Corvette, Conway cleaned up the field with over a handful of wins. Conway and Goad won Spirit of Daytona's first race in Phoenix in the AGT class and is looking to do the same with the GTO this weekend.
