Motorcycle World Champion to race at Phoenix.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 28, 2003) -- Eddie Lawson, a four-time world GP champion and two-time AMA Superbike champion, will race this Friday at Phoenix International Raceway as part of the AJ's Fine Foods 250 race weekend. Lawson will join Chuck Goldsborough's Team Lexus in the Grand-Am Cup Sport Touring UnitedAuto 200 race that is slated to start at 6:00 p.m. Friday.

"As someone who has ridden motorcycles since I was 12 years old and followed his career, its an honor and privilege to have someone of his caliber and character with our factory effort," Goldsborough said.

Baltimore-based Team Lexus is the defending Sport Touring I class champion and is also leading the 2003 team owner points race. Goldsborough was not certain which of the team's three Lexus IS300s Lawson and co-driver Johnny Rutherford IV will be driving, saying that he will match the right drivers and cars before qualifying on Friday afternoon.

Lawson, known to motorcycle race fans as "Fast Eddie", won his world titles in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989. His first three crowns came aboard Yamaha machinery. The last championship was earned on a Honda. He garnered 31 GP victories over that span.

After retiring from GP racing, Lawson had a brief career with IRL. Most of his racing activity of late has been in shifter karts for fun. The Phoenix race will mark his first start in Grand American competition.

Tickets are currently on sale for the AJ's Fine Foods 250 and Grand-Am Cup Phoenix Sport Touring 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, Saturday, May 3, as well as the Grand-Am Cup Series UnitedAuto Grand Sport 200 on Friday, May 2.
