Subaru Team To Start 4th and 15th at Canadian Grand-Am KONI Challenge Race
The Subaru Road Racing Team's pair of Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B sedans will take the green flag at Saturday's Grand-Am KONI Challenge road race at Mosport International Raceway from the fourth and 15th place starting positions.
Don Knowles, Pittsboro, N.C., recorded a quick qualifying lap of 93.135 miles per hour the undulating 2.459-mile road course near Oshawa, Ont., on a very hot and sunny afternoon. His teammate, Chuck Hemmingson, W. Des Moines, Ia., was slightly slower with a 92.445mph lap.
"The fact that the eight fastest cars qualified within one second of each other gives us an idea of how close Saturday's race is going to be," said ICY/Phoenix team co-principal Joe Aquilante. "And for our Subaru cars to be right there with the top echelon of the series reflects positively on our preparation this weekend. Every time we've been on the track, it has been with the goal of constantly improving what is a great product to start with."
"There are 31 cars that qualified in the Street Tuner class alone," Knowles noted. "Managing traffic not only within our class, but also working with the quicker Grand Sports class cars will be a challenge. We know from history, though, that there will be some accidents; we just have to stay vigilant and avoid such incidents."
The 2 ½-hour race, which takes the green flag Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m. ET, will be the third round of the Grand-Am KONI Challenge series. Knowles will share the driving duties for the team's #141 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B with 20-year old Andrew Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., while Hemmingson will be joined by Kris Skavnes, Sparta, N.J.
