DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 18, 2001) -- The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series will travel to Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, to compete in a three-hour endurance race, June 22-24. Several Ontario natives will be vying for a spot in Victory Lane as they race around the 2.5-mile, 10-turn road course.
Highlighting the field of local racers will be Devon Powell, of Port Perry, in the Sunoco/Encompass-sponsored #11 Corvette Z06 of Powell Motorsport. Powell placed first overall and in the Super Grand Sport (SGS) class at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course earlier this month. The team also has two additional first-place overall finishes this season at Watkins Glen and Daytona. Powell enters the Mosport race with a second-place ranking in the Grand-Am Cup SGS class team standing and third in the driver standings.
A pair of Toronto residents, Robert Julien and Steven Goodbody, will share driving duties in the Sunoco/Denon-sponsored #19 Porsche 933 of Fiorano Racing. The duo placed second in the Grand Sport (GS) class at Phoenix and third in the GS class in Daytona. Jean-Francois Dumoulin, of Trios-Rivieres, Quebec, will also be racing at Mosport and has previously shared driving duties with Julien in the Porsche. The duo placed first in the GS class last month in Watkins Glen and second at Mid-Ohio earlier this month. The Fiorano team currently holds second place in the GS team standings.
Also competing in this weekend's Mosport race will be Toronto-resident Jeff Lapcevich. Driving the Royal Purple/Macedonian Pictures/Shelby American/BASF-sponsored #88 Mustang Cobra R of DG Racing, Lapcevich has one win under his belt after placing first in the GS class at Daytona earlier this season. David Shep, of Toronto, is ranked second in the GS driver standings, racing in the Mears Motor Coach/Champion Porsche/Fikse Dynamic Suspension-sponsored #66 Porsche 911 of Speedsource.
Other racers from the Ontario area will include Jeff Lorriman, of Georgetown, John Sherk, of Pickering, David Lacey and Greg Wilkins, of Toronto, Nigel Gleeson, of Markam, Jim Kenle, of Milton, Don Blewett, of Mississauga, Len Clue, of Gloucester, and John Lockhart, of Caledon Village.
The racing excitement will get underway at the Mosport International Raceway on Friday with practice sessions. Qualifying for the Grand-Am Cup Three-Hour Race will be held on Saturday morning, with the race beginning later that day at 3 p.m. Other series racing this weekend at Mosport include the Canadian ChampCar Lights, Isseco Kumho FV 1200, Formula Ford 1600, Canada G.T.
