Maxwell saptures Mont-Tremblant 250 pole; Team Lexus sweeps ST I top three
MONT-TREMBLANT, Quebec (September 13, 2002) -- Canadian Scott Maxwell captured the pole for Saturday's Grand-Am Cup Mont-Tremblant 250 at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant. The current points leader clocked a 91.145 mph lap in 1:44.668 behind the wheel of the #76 Porsche GT3 Cup of Toronto-based Doncaster Racing. Devon Powell, Port Perry, Ontario, will line up the Powell Motorsports #11 Corvette Z06 beside Maxwell on the front row for the 2:30 p.m. start.
"I've done a lot of racing here. My first race was in 1985, but I've haven't been up here for three or four years," remarked Maxwell after taking the pole. "I always loved the course, but now its just phenomenal. It's great; I just love being here."
French Canadian driver Benoit Theetge clocked the quickest lap in the Grand Sport II class. He turned a 1:49.056 lap at 87.478 mph in the Theetge Motorsports #73 Acura NSX. "(My lap) was certainly fast, and it's a pleasure for me to be on the poll here in Quebec," noted Theetge.
Howie Liebengood had the second quickest time in the class with his 86.194 mph lap in 1:50.680 in the Competition Preparation #49 BMW M3.
Team Lexus swept the top-three spots in the Sport Touring I class. Andy Lally piloted the #2 Lexus IS300 to the quickest lap in the class at 84.266 mph in 1:53.213. His teammate, Ian James, was only a tenth of a second behind him in the #3 Lexus, while team owner Chuck Goldsborough put the #0 entry into the third position.
"It's very exciting. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this was going to happen," commented Goldsborough. "We've been working very hard testing between VIR and Mid-Ohio, so testing is hopefully paying off."
Wayne Nonnamaker recorded the quickest lap in the Sport Touring II class. His 1:59.593 lap at 79.771 mph in the HRPworld.com #41 Acura Integra LS put in front of the ST II points leading #27 Acura of Bill Fenton Motorsports.
"(My fast lap) was a clean lap, and I just got a couple of good drafts off the Lexus, which makes a really good hole in the air," said Nonnamaker.
