Bell Takes Another KONI Challenge Pole Position
Last-lap flyer scores second consecutive pole start
(1 May 2009) Millville, NJ--Matt Bell used a different playbook on Friday, but the result was exactly the same.
After taking pole position on his first flying lap in the last round of competition, Bell overcame constantly changing track conditions to score his second consecutive Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge pole position driving the No. 96 Turner Motorsport H&R Springs/StopTech Brakes BMW M3 at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Friday.
Bell, who will share the driving duties with Bill Auberlen in Saturday's Garden State 250, scored the pole-winning time of 1:32.389-seconds on the very last lap of the session as the 2.25-mile track was drenched with a heavy rain just moments before the 15-minute session took the green flag.
The pole marks three consecutive top-three starts for Bell, who is racing in his first season of GS Class competition and took a dramatic breakthrough win in the season-opener at Daytona.
"Every turn, every lap was something you had to keep up with because the track was drying out every time by," said Bell, who was happy to deliver the pole position result as a small token of a birthday gift on his mothers birthday. "We were fastest in the morning practice, and even though we were really confident with the wet-weather set-up that Turner had, we stuck with what we had and it paid off as the track dried off. The car is so well balanced, and Bill and I are really enjoying driving this car here. Daytona worked out well for us, and we had a good start at Homestead, so hopefully things will go our way again tomorrow."
The 2.5-hour combined ST and GS class event will take the green flag at 3:10 PM ET, with the race slated to be broadcast on SPEED at 12:00 PM-May 9.
