Mansfield, OH -- As the Planet Earth Motorsports effort headed to Mid Ohio for the seventh race of the season they were looking to pad their Championship lead in the Grand Am Cup Grand Sports II Driver's Championship. With three wins in the first six races the team held a substantial lead in the Driver's Championship and was sitting in second in the Team Championship.
Qualifying saw Joe Nonnamaker sit on the pole early in the session in the #41. As the final two laps wound down two cars jumped in front of Joe, including the team's #40 SpeedSource Porsche with Will Nonnamaker in the car. The #40 took the pole position setting a new lap record.
"We came down here about a month ago and did a test session. This being our home track and getting a whole day of testing right before this really paid off," said Will Nonnamaker after qualifying. "We have a lot of family and friends here this week. Our sponsor GOJO, who is based out of Ohio, is coming here, so it's real exciting."
The Grand Sports race was on Sunday at Noon. As the cars rolled onto the track for their pace laps the rain started. On the first lap both cars sustained damage from accidents on the track. As quickly as the rain came, it went away. Unfortunately for the Planet Earth team the #41 ended up with a broken radiator and had to pit for a ten lap radiator change.
"The crew did an amazing job getting the radiator changed, but when you are sitting in the car it seems like it lasts forever," commented Wayne Nonnamaker, finishing driver of the #41 Orison Marketing / GOJO sponsored machine. "We got back on the track and ended up in eleventh. We were just running for championship points."
The #40 Orison Marketing / GOJO sponsored Porsche battled back from last place to finish fourth with Joe Nonnamaker finishing for Will Nonnamaker.
After Mid Ohio Joe and Wayne Nonnamaker sit just four points ahead of BMW drivers Terry Borcheller and Forrest Barber in the Driver's points. In the Team Championship Planet Earth Motorsports now sits six points behind Michael Baughman Racing. With four races remaining the season takes a ten week break before returning to action on September 12-14 at Mosport International.
