(Newton, IA) 21 April 07--Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood went two for two on podium performances, backing up their run to second place last weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a strong third-place finish at Iowa Speedway on Saturday in the Turner Motorsports BMW 330i. The result moved the duo into first position in the championship standings, three points clear of the rest of the KONI field.
The weekend didn't get off to an ideal start after the Turner Motorsports crew diagnosed a problem with the ST-class entry after Burrows and Hopwood each had brief exploratory runs on the 1.3-mile infield road course. But the championship-winning team rallied to make several significant changes to the car, which Burrows qualified fifth on Saturday morning.
"We missed a lot of the test day yesterday with a motor problem but the Turner guys did an amazing job to get a new engine in the car, change the clutch, and put in new brakes so we could get out there today," said Burrows.
Burrows wheeled the blue and yellow Turner machine for the opening stages of the race, recovering from a bad start to move up considerably before handing the controls over to Hopwood.
"My main objective for the race was to get up into the top three before turning the car over to Trevor," said Burrows. "Even though I didn't get a stellar start, I managed to work my way up to third before the pit stop. After the driver change, Trevor did another excellent job to get us back up onto the podium for the second week in a row. Considering the challenges that we had this weekend, I couldn't be happier about the results."
After taking over from Burrows, Hopwood moved his way back up through the field, leading for nearly ten laps. A well-timed yellow flag seemed like the perfect opportunity to convert the lead into a win with a splash of fuel, but when Hopwood entered the pits, he brought too much enthusiasm and speed along with him.
"The strategy the Turner Motorsport guys had was just perfect," said Hopwood. "I made a mistake coming on to pit lane and got a penalty and that probably cost us the race but it's great to get on the podium again. It's early yet in the season but I'm happy to be where we are in the championship and hopefully we can keep that momentum up. I'm really excited about driving this Turner BMW 330i at Laguna in a few weeks."
