Victory In Sunny Florida
Homestead, FL (March 15, 2009) - After the exciting race in Daytona, Randy has decided to join Compass360 Racing and its field of three cars for the full Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge ST season. With the permanent ink barely dry, Randy, with co-driver Christian Miller, drove their #74 Honda Civic Si to victory in dramatic fashion at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Randy and Christian started their South Florida weekend with strong finishes in practice. On Friday, Christian qualified the Honda in second place, just .003 seconds off the pole of the Subaru team of Aquilante and Skavnes. Christian started the race and led 37 laps in a row before bringing the Honda into the pits, under a caution, for a pit stop and driver change. Randy hopped in but a fueling issue let to a slow stop and he rejoined the race in seventh. Randy quickly moved to the front and had a amazing battle back and forth with the Mazda MX-5 of Tom Long. Randy took the win by .129 seconds, the second closest margin of victory in the history of the KONI Challenge.
"What a wonderful race. I am most impressed with the performance of my co-driver Christian Miller. He led most of the race and when he gave me the car, it was in excellent condition. This was Christian's first win. He did a fantastic job. Even though we had fueling problems in the pits, I was able to move towards the front because he had taken such good care of the car. Tom Long and I had a titanic battle for the next hour. We must have exchanged the lead about 25 times. The Mazda MX-5 is the killer car right now. It is lighter but our Honda has V-Tech power on the top end. We had great fun and put on a terrific show for the fans. On the last lap, we came out of the hairpin side by side. I beat him to the checker by just .129 seconds! Its a shame it isn't televised because we put on the best show ever."
"I would like to thank my personal sponsors Team Janica Racing, WeatherTech, Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, ChaseCam, and saferacer.com for their continued support. I would also like to thank my new car owner Karl Thomson, crew chief Ray Lee and the Compass360 team for doing such a great job preparing the cars. We had no mechanical issues. This was one of my most enjoyable racing experiences; intense and competitive. This gave me a very strong dose of the racing drug I love so much, complete with a happy ending."
Randy's next race will be at Sebring International Raceway on March 20 where Randy will begin to defend his Speed World Challenge GT championship. The brand new K-PAX/3R Racing Volvo S60 passed its debut test with flying colors The next action for the Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge will be May 2 at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
