Hopwood and Burrows score maiden KONI Challenge podium at Homestead
(Homestead, FL) 15 April 07--Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood combined to convert a front-row starting position into a second place finish in Sunday's Grand-Am KONI Challenge 400k ST-class race in the Turner Motorsport BMW 330i.
The podium appearance comes in just the second KONI event for the driving pair, who had to rally through the field late in the two and a half hour race to move into podium position.
Burrows took the green flag after taking second position in Saturday's qualifying, and held station in the top three through the opening stages of the race and through multiple restarts. Burrows gave up third position and took to the pits for fuel, tires, and a driver change as Hopwood strapped himself in for the second half of the two and a half-hour event. The stop went to plan for the championship-winning Turner Motorsport squad, but Hopwood was forced soon after to return to the pits to sort out a problem with the Grand-Am driver identification module.
Returning to the field down in twenty-first position, New Hampshire native Hopwood had a big task ahead of him, but he made quick work of the field to move into a battle for the lead in the closing stages of the race, but had to settle for second position to insure he had the fuel to make it to the finish.
"The race was great," Hopwood said. "I've got to thank the Turner Motorsport crew for giving me such a good car all weekend, it was perfect everywhere. Adam did a great job in the first stint. I really had a great time working through the field, and the race I had with Shane (Lewis) at the end was pretty good."
Hopwood and Burrows started the season off with a strong seventh place finish at Daytona, and bolstered their championship standing with Sunday's run to the podium.
"I would certainly be the first to say that I would have never imagined that we'd be standing in the second spot on the podium this early in the season," said Burrows. "This is a new series and new car for both Trevor and myself, but we're thrilled. Certainly, it's a testament to the awesome job that Turner does. Those cars are prepared so well and their strategy is spot-on. I can't say enough about the drive that Trevor had in the second part of the race. It felt good to qualify like we did, and it feels even better to back it up in the race like we were able to today."
The KONI Challenge Series will race again in one week as Grand-Am makes its debut visit to the new Iowa Speedway in Newton.
