Freedom Autosport to Race New MAZDASPEED3 in 2010 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Freedom Autosport will return to the Street Tuner class of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series in 2010 with the all-new MAZDASPEED3. Mazda recently announced the addition of the five-door car to the series, and Freedom Autosport was one of the first teams to sign on for the factory-supported program.
It's no secret that Freedom Autosport and Mazda make a winning combination: during the 2009 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season (known at the time as KONI Challenge), the team earned two Street Tuner (ST) wins and eight podiums while helping Mazda secure second in the manufacturer title.
Freedom Autosport owner and driver Derek Whitis first got a taste of Mazda power when he competed in Spec Miata events. He was so impressed with both Mazda's performance and factory support that Freedom Autosport currently features with a stable of Mazda MX-5s.
"We believe strongly in what Mazda is doing across all levels of motorsports and we are pleased to align ourselves with their strategy by adding the MAZDASPEED3 to our Continental Tire Challenge program," noted team co-owner Rhett O'Doski.
Mazda power helped the team earn two wins this season: Andrew and Alfredo Carbonell were victorious at Trois-Rivieres, while Whitis and Tom Long ended the season with a win at Virginia International Raceway.
The four-hour finale at VIR marked the first Continental Tire Challenge victory for Whitis and Long, who will be co-drivers once again in 2010. Rhett O'Doski and Andrew Carbonell will also be driving a Freedom Autosport MAZDASPEED3.
"We have been so pleased with the Mazda MX-5s in this class: the ST win at Trois-Rivieres was an historic highlight for our team," said Whitis. "We have high expectations for the MAZDASPEED3. It's an amazing vehicle for the street and it will be a very strong contender on the track."
The road-going MAZDASPEED3 features a turbocharged Mazda MZR engine, which will also provide the power in the Continental Tire Challenge version of the car. Freedom Autosport will be campaigning four of the MAZDASPEED3s.
