Billy Johnson Will Make His Grand-Am Cup Debut At California Speedway.
Fontana, California ---18 year-old Billy Johnson will make his first start in the Grand Am Cup series this weekend in Fontana aboard a SpeedSource Mazda RX8. Johnson, who spent last season competing in the inaugural Formula BMW USA Championship, will be making his first step into professional sports car racing at Fontana. The Former Shifter Kart Grand National Champion will be racing a SpeedSource Mazda RX 8 in the ST class with fellow 2004 Formula BMW scholarship winner James Hinchcliffe.
In the 2004's inaugural Formula BMW USA season, Johnson finished a strong 5th in the Championship and received the coveted "Sportsman of the Year Award" presented by RACER Magazine. In 2003, Billy Johnson was the lead driver of JM Racing/ Avanti in the Star's of Tomorrow series in ICC aboard the Alex Barron signature Avanti. He was also a Red Bull F1 driver search semi-finalist, and a runner-up in the annual Skip Barber Karting Scholarship.
In 2004, SpeedSource won both the driver's and team's championship in Grand-Am Cup ST Class in the Mazda RX-8. Since its inception, SpeedSource has specialized in Mazda racing. The Grand-Am Cup will be held on Saturday, April 3rd starting at 2:45 pm. The race last 200 miles/ 71 laps and will be televised on Speed Channel the following week. Check your local listings.
