Automatic Racing Moves Closer To Points Lead Despite Facing Adversity At Fontana.

FONTANA, Calif.- Automatic Racing moved closer to taking over the points lead in the Grand Sports II class of the Grand-Am Cup Series, finishing fifth and sixth in class during a challenging Lexus Grand American 250 at California Speedway on Saturday, June 7.

Jep Thornton and David Russell finished sixth in the No. 09 Automatic Racing BMW M3 after qualifying 11th. Thornton developed tonsillitis early in the week, and was not able to arrive at the track until Friday night. On Saturday, he ran one practice session and then qualified, achieving 11th on the starting grid despite having never driven the track until that day.

Russell, who was also at California Speedway for the first time, completed only one practice session the day before the race due to mechanical problems.

Thornton started the race, but pitted during a full-course caution after about 15 laps. He handed the driving duties to Russell, who finished the race. "As soon as we got a caution I was going to come in and hand over to David," explained Thornton. "On the start, I bumped with another car and lost my left mirror, so that side was blind. Between being sick and losing my mirror, I was having a hard time. I'm very happy with sixth place, considering that I was sick, we lost a mirror and we did not get much practice time."

Terry Earwood and Eric Van Cleef started from the sixth spot on the grid, and moved into fifth, where they finished.

Automatic Racing was second in Grand Sports II Team Owner points, 13 points behind Planet Earth Motorsports, prior to the race at California Speedway. The fifth and sixth-place finishes moved Automatic Racing up five points, and they are only eight points away from re-taking the class lead.

Automatic Racing is sponsored by Automatic Commercial Aircraft, LandAir, BBS, Engine Music Studios, Redline Oil and Moton Shocks.
