David Empringham held off Scott Maxwell in the closing laps to win Friday's KONI Challenge Fresh from Florida 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Empringham, who shared his Blackforest Motorsports Ford Mustang GT with Tom Nastasi, finished 6.4 seconds ahead of Maxwell's Hyper Sport Ford Mustang GT, which he shared with Joe Foster.

"I had a little bit of a run on Scott," explained Empringham, describing his pass of Maxwell. "I knew the only way I could get him would be on the inside. I hung a little bit high on the outside of his quarter panel and just as the banking was finished, I dove to the inside. I think he knew that was happening and he was already on the white line and I could tell he wasn't gong to give it up. It didn't matter. I was going to go on the inside. It was a pretty tight squeeze and we both managed to make it through."

The Turner Motorsport BMW M3 of Bill Auberlen and Chris Gleason finished third.

In the ST class, the team of Karl Thompson and Billy Johnson took the win in their Kensai Racing Acura TSX. The Davis Motorsports Acura RSX-S of Bob Endicott and Ken Dobson finished second, followed by the i-Moto Racing Acura TSX of Nick Wittmer and Kuno Wittmer.

"The battle for first place was a close and tough on," said Johnson. "All of the cars were really evenly matched. Everybody was just trying to pair up and take off from the rest of the field. My co-driver was able to pass for first place and I was able to continue. Fortunately, the other two Acuras were battling it out for second. And that slowed them down. But I ran into some traffic near the end that it made it closer than I though it would be."
