BGB PORSCHES TOP SUNDAY TEST AT DAYTONA FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW
(Ormond Beach, FL- January 8, 2008) With only a few minutes remaining in Sunday's final session at the 2008 Daytona Test Days, the BGB Motorsports name returned to the top of the time sheets with a lap time of 2:01.133 and an average speed of 105.8 mph to secure the top spot ahead of 26 other competitors. As testing got underway for the Grand American Road Racing Association's Koni Challenge Series, it looked as if Craig Stanton was merely finishing what he started. BGB opened the weekend with the top spot in the 1st session on Friday as Stanton put the team's benchmark #38 Porsche in P1. Stanton wasn't alone in the effort to keep BGB at the top. BGB's newest shoe and IRL series regular Alex Barron put in his share of work. Barron has promised to help deliver a Team Championship to BGB in 2008 with season-long codriver Dan Selznick. On Friday afternoon he delivered his Porsche to a P5 spot despite not getting many laps that session.
"While it's nice to say that we won practice, apparently you don't get any prize money or points for that. We went to the podium but no one was there," added John Tecce with a laugh and a smile. "In all seriousness, I expected us to be the fastest car here this weekend. We're local and this is our home track. We've spent three different weekends on track at Daytona since the end of the season and we've been preparing for this since then. I don't know how many laps we've run here since November but it's a lot."
As most teams are still on the road headed back to their shops for two short weeks, BGB is not taking for granted the luxury of living 14 miles from Daytona International Speedway. The cars have been unloaded and it's back to business as usual at the BGB shop as the team prepares to get ready for the first race of the 2008 season. The Koni Challenge Series will open with a 3 hour race Friday evening January 25th before the 46th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. With a potential entry list of close to 100 cars, it should make for a pretty exciting event.
Top honors for the combined 3 day test session went to former BGB driver Hugh Plumb and his #60 Rehagen Racing Mustang GT. Plumb's lap of 2:00.9 was the fastest time for any Koni Challenge car during the weekend as the Mustang topped 3 of the 6 testing sessions. Furthermore, Plumb's lap on Saturday raised the bar as he became the first driver ever to break underneath the 2:01.0 mark in a Koni Challenge car. Two years ago Craig Stanton became the first Koni Challenge competitor to officially break below a lap time of 2:02.0 in a race to secure the original track record in his BGB Porsche 996. A year later it was broken by Bill Auberlen in a BMW M3. Plumb, Stanton and Auberlen will have to settle this during the race at the end of the month.
